The Sequetron is a PC-based system which connects between a MIDI keyboard and a MIDI sound device such as a synthesizer, and provides multi-track record, playback & control of sequences in real-time all via the MIDI keyboard. The design principles were aimed at ‘hiding’ the computer from the musician and making the process of looping sequences as quick & simple as possible. Everything is controlled from the music keyboard and all controls operate in real-time while the instrument is playing; the PC keyboard & mouse are not used. Self-contained MIDI keyboard/sound devices can be used if they have an option to disable local MIDI control, ie the sound generator section can be controlled by MIDI-in as opposed to the local keyboard. It can record & play up to 7 sequences, each of which can be as short or as long as you like (subject to RAM), and you can set them running at different times to produce syncopated effects. There is no restriction to 8 or 16 ’steps’ as with some sequencers, and it doesn’t have to be monophonic; anything you can play, chords etc. will all be recorded. Attributes for each sequence can be adjusted separately, such as patch, channel & pitch, all changes taking place at the end of each cycle to maintain the rhythmic feel.
